Adjust Your Sails

On what she hopes her children will tell THEIR children about her.

On what she hopes her children will tell THEIR children about her.

“…she stood in the storm, and when the wind did not blow her way – and surely it has not – she adjusted her sails.”

~Elizabeth Edwards on what she hopes her children will tell their children about her.

I’ve never been so inspired to write in my entire life! After reading that quote,  I realized it describes me, and many others, to such perfection. We’ve stood in the storm; we’ve braved the winds and the rain, and we’ve learned that “we cannot control the wind, but we can adjust our sails.” Yet another quote, this time by Audre Lorde, reminded me of what my soul has long believed:

“I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood.”

I firmly believe in the healing, restorative benefits of creative writing and sharing. There is something therapeutic about safely sharing our stories in a loving, supportive environment. Something about speaking it, seeing it in written form, and having others bear witness makes our stories real and our pain undeniable. We realize we have tasted the beauty in life, we have survived the horrors, we have fought to see another day. There is strength in solidarity, solace in support.

My prayer is that all who chance upon this blog will be encouraged to live fully. We will all face storms in life, and we can’t foresee all of the trials ahead, but we can make a firm commitment to meet the raging wind with adjusted sails.

“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” ~2 Corinthians 4:8-9
